A composite door is built in layers rather than extruded as a single material. A solid insulating core is wrapped in a glass-reinforced plastic skin, with a reinforced subframe carrying the locking. That construction is why composite doors outperform both uPVC and timber on thermal efficiency and security at the same time.
For a front door it is usually the strongest all-round choice. The skin holds colour without repainting, the core does not warp or swell the way timber does in wet weather, and the thickness allows for serious multi-point locking without a heavy frame.
Where composite loses out is glass area. If you want a mostly glazed entrance, aluminium gives slimmer frames and more light. If you want a solid, secure, well-insulated front door that looks substantial, composite is the answer.
What affects the price of a composite door
Composite doors are priced per unit. The variables:
- Door style — solid, part-glazed or with decorative glazing, and how ornate the panel design is.
- Size and configuration — single door, door with one side screen, or door with side screens and a fanlight above.
- Glazing — plain, obscure, leaded, stained or bevelled decorative glass.
- Colour — standard range or a bespoke RAL match, and whether the finish differs inside and out.
- Hardware and security — lock specification, anti-snap cylinder, handles, letterplate, knocker, and whether you want a keyless or smart lock.
- Threshold — standard or low-threshold for step-free access.

Common questions about composite doors
Composite or uPVC for a front door?
Composite, in most cases. It is thicker, better insulated, more secure and looks more substantial. uPVC costs less and is a reasonable choice for a back or side door where appearance matters less.
Composite or aluminium?
Composite is more thermally efficient and generally the better value for a traditional solid front door. Aluminium gives slimmer frames and much more glass, which suits a contemporary property or a glazed entrance. We supply both and will tell you which fits your house.
Are composite doors secure?
Yes. The reinforced subframe and solid core take multi-point locking properly, and we fit anti-snap cylinders as standard. The cylinder is the usual weak point on any door, and specifying it correctly matters more than the door material.
Will the colour fade?
The GRP skin holds colour far better than painted timber and does not need repainting. Very dark colours on a south-facing door will weather slightly over many years, as any dark surface does, but it is not the flaking-and-peeling problem you get with paint.
Can I have a keyless or smart lock?
Yes. Keypad, fingerprint and app-controlled locking are all available. Decide before manufacture, since the door is prepared for the hardware at the factory.
Do composite doors warp?
The solid core and GRP skin are dimensionally stable, so they do not swell in wet weather or shrink in dry weather the way timber does. This is one of the main practical reasons people move away from timber front doors.
Do I get a FENSA certificate?
Yes. External door replacements are registered on the national scheme, and you will need that certificate when you sell.
