A glass balustrade does the job of a handrail without blocking the view or the light. On a balcony, a terrace or a staircase, it is the difference between a barrier you look at and one you look through.
Balustrades are a structural item, not a decorative one. They have to resist a defined horizontal load under BS 6180, and that load depends on the building type and where the balustrade sits. This is why the fixing detail and the substrate matter as much as the glass, and why we survey the structure rather than just measuring the opening.
We supply frameless systems with a base channel or standoff fixings, framed and post systems, Juliet balconies, and internal stair and landing balustrades. All glass is toughened laminated, so if a pane is ever damaged the interlayer holds it in place rather than leaving an open edge.
What affects the price of a glass balustrade
Balustrades are priced per project, and the structure matters as much as the glass:
- Total run length — and how many corners, returns or level changes it has.
- System type — frameless base-channel, standoff fixings, or a framed post system. Frameless costs more.
- Location — external balcony, terrace, internal staircase or Juliet balcony. Each has different loading requirements.
- Glass specification — thickness and interlayer, driven by the calculated load rather than by preference.
- Substrate and fixings — what you are fixing into determines the detail, and sometimes structural strengthening is needed first.
- Handrail — whether you want a capping rail, a separate handrail, or a true frameless top edge.

Common questions about glass balustrades
Is a glass balustrade safe?
Yes, when correctly specified and fixed. We use toughened laminated glass, so a damaged pane is held together by the interlayer rather than falling away. The system is specified to meet the horizontal loading required by BS 6180 for that location.
Do I need a handrail on top?
It depends on the location and the loading. Some applications require a continuous handrail, particularly on staircases. A capping rail also protects the glass edge. We confirm what your specific situation needs at survey.
What is a Juliet balcony?
A balustrade fitted across a set of doors or a full-height window at first floor or above, where there is no walkable balcony behind it. It lets you open the doors fully for light and air with a safe barrier in place.
Frameless or with posts?
Frameless gives the cleanest look and the best view, and costs more. A post system costs less and can span longer runs with thinner glass. On a balcony where the view is the point, frameless is usually worth it.
Can it be fitted to a timber deck?
Sometimes, but the substrate has to take the load, and many timber decks do not without strengthening. This is exactly why we survey the structure rather than quoting off a measurement.
How do I clean it?
Normal glass cleaner. A rain-repellent coating is worth considering on an exposed external balustrade, since it reduces water spotting.
Do I need Building Control approval?
For a new balcony or a change to a protective barrier, generally yes. Replacing an existing balustrade like for like is usually simpler. We will tell you which situation you are in.
