The complaint people have about older conservatories is always the same: freezing in winter, unusable in summer. That was a genuine problem with the uPVC-and-polycarbonate builds of the 1990s and 2000s, and it is why the word carries some baggage.
Modern aluminium conservatories are a different product. Thermally broken frames, proper double or triple glazing, solar control glass in the roof and correctly specified ventilation give you a room that works in February and in July. Done properly, it is an extension with a lot of glass rather than a greenhouse attached to the house.
We handle the glazing, frames and roof. Base work, groundwork and any structural alterations are normally handled by your builder, and we are clear at survey about where the line sits so nothing falls between two trades.
What affects the price of a conservatory
Conservatories vary more in price than any other product we supply, because the scope varies so much. The main factors:
- Footprint and height — the floor area and whether it needs to accommodate an existing door or window head height.
- Roof type — fully glazed, lantern-style, lean-to or solid tiled. Roof choice drives both cost and how the room performs.
- Glass specification — solar control in the roof is not optional if you want to use the room in summer.
- Doors and windows within it — bifolds, sliders or French doors, and how many opening windows.
- Base and groundwork — usually a separate builder’s cost, but it affects your total project budget.
- Heating and electrics — also normally separate trades, but worth planning at the same time.

Common questions about conservatories
Will it be too cold in winter and too hot in summer?
Not if it is specified properly. Thermally broken aluminium frames, correct glazing, solar control glass in the roof and adequate ventilation address both. The conservatories that fail on this are almost always older builds with polycarbonate roofs and no thermal break.
Do I need planning permission?
Many conservatories fall under permitted development, but there are limits on size, height and how close you build to a boundary. Listed buildings and conservation areas are treated differently. Check with your local authority before committing.
Do I need Building Control approval?
Conservatories are often exempt if they meet specific conditions, including being separated from the house by external-quality doors and having an independent heating system. If you remove the wall between house and conservatory, it stops being a conservatory in regulatory terms and becomes an extension. We flag this at survey.
Glass roof or solid roof?
Glass gives you the light, which is the point of a conservatory. A solid or tiled roof gives better thermal performance and makes the space feel more like a room, but you lose much of what you built it for. A lantern in a solid roof is a reasonable middle ground.
Who does the base and groundwork?
Normally your own builder. We supply and install the frames, glazing and roof. Being explicit about this split at survey stage stops jobs stalling because each trade assumed the other was doing it.
How long does it take?
Our manufacture and installation typically runs to the same 10-day pattern as our other products once the base is ready. The base and groundwork are the longer part of the programme.
Will it add value to my house?
A well-built, thermally efficient conservatory generally does. A cheap one that is unusable half the year can count against you at valuation. That is the honest position.
