Heritage profiles are designed to replicate the slim sightlines of traditional steel windows, the sort found in 1920s and 1930s properties and in the industrial-style glazing that has since become a design staple. The visual language is the same: narrow frames, fine glazing bars, deep reveals.
The difference is performance. Original steel windows are single glazed, thermally poor and prone to rust. Heritage aluminium gives you the same appearance with a thermal break, modern double glazing, and a powder-coated finish that will not corrode.
This is the profile that usually gets approved in conservation areas where standard casement windows would not, because the sightlines match what was there before. Approval always depends on your local authority, so check with the conservation officer before ordering.
What affects the price of heritage doors and windows
Heritage profiles carry a premium over standard casement systems because the sections are more complex to fabricate. The variables:
- Number of openings — a full-house replacement carries a better per-unit rate.
- Glazing bar layout — how many bars and in what pattern. This drives fabrication time significantly.
- Product type — fixed lights, casements, doors, or internal screens.
- Glass specification — double or triple glazed, acoustic glass for a road-facing elevation, and whether slim-cavity units are needed to suit the profile.
- Colour finish — typically black or anthracite, though any RAL is available.
- Access and existing openings — period openings are rarely square, and each may need individual templating.

Common questions about heritage doors and windows
Will heritage aluminium be approved in a conservation area?
Often, because the sightlines closely match original steel. But approval rests with your local authority, and some are stricter than others. Speak to the conservation officer with the profile details before you order. We can supply the technical drawings you need for that conversation.
Is it the same as Crittall?
Crittall is a brand of steel window. Heritage aluminium is a different material designed to replicate that look with modern thermal performance. If a listed building consent specifically requires steel, aluminium will not satisfy it.
How slim are the sightlines?
Considerably slimmer than a standard casement window, which is the whole point of the system. The exact figure depends on the profile chosen and is confirmed on your quote.
Can I have it internally as a room divider?
Yes, and it is one of the most popular uses. Internal heritage screens divide open-plan space without blocking light. Usually single glazed internally, since there is no thermal requirement.
Will it be as thermally efficient as a standard window?
Close, but the slim sightlines mean slightly less insulating frame area than a chunky modern profile. The trade-off is appearance for a small thermal difference. We confirm the U-value on your quote so you can judge.
What colours are available?
Any RAL. Black and anthracite grey are overwhelmingly the most requested because they read closest to original steel.
Do I need listed building consent?
If the property is listed, yes, for any window or door replacement. Conservation area properties may need planning permission depending on the designation. Establish this before committing to anything.
