Open-plan living has an obvious problem: no separation. Cooking smells reach the sofa, and there is nowhere quiet to take a call. Building a stud wall solves it but kills the light and undoes the reason you opened the space up.
An internal glazed screen is the middle ground. It divides the space acoustically and visually while letting light pass straight through. In a Victorian terrace where the only natural light comes from the front and rear, that matters more than it does in a newer property.
We supply fixed screens, hinged and pivot doors, sliding and pocket doors, and Crittall-style screens with glazing bars. Internal glazing is usually single glazed, since there is no thermal requirement, which keeps the frames slimmer and the cost down.
What affects the price of internal doors and screens
Internal glazing is priced per project:
- Size of the opening — a single door versus a full-height room divider across a wide span.
- Configuration — fixed screen, hinged door, pivot door, sliding door or pocket door.
- Glazing bar layout — plain glass is simplest; Crittall-style bars add fabrication.
- Glass type — clear, fluted, reeded, tinted or obscure. Fluted and reeded are currently very popular for privacy without losing light.
- Structural opening — whether the opening exists or needs forming, which is normally a builder’s item.
- Finish — any RAL, most commonly black or anthracite.

Common questions about internal doors and screens
Do internal screens need to be double glazed?
No. There is no thermal requirement between two heated rooms, so single glazing is standard. It keeps the frames slimmer and costs less. Double glazing is only worth considering where you want additional acoustic separation.
How much sound will it block?
A glazed screen reduces sound noticeably but will not give you the isolation of a solid wall. If a home office needs to be genuinely quiet during calls, say so at survey and we will specify accordingly, including acoustic laminated glass.
What is fluted or reeded glass?
Glass with a vertical ribbed texture that distorts the view through it while still passing light. It gives privacy without the flat, dated look of traditional obscure glass, and it is currently the most requested finish for internal screens.
Can you do a sliding or pocket door?
Yes. Sliding suits openings where there is no room to swing a door. A pocket door disappears into the wall cavity entirely, which needs the wall built to suit and is best planned before plastering.
Do I need Building Control approval?
Not for a screen within an existing opening. If you are forming a new opening in a structural wall, yes. We flag this at survey before you commit to anything.
Is the glass safe?
All glass in critical locations, which includes doors and low-level glazing, is toughened or laminated to meet Building Regulations Part K. This is not optional and we specify it as standard.
Can it match my external heritage windows?
Yes. Using the same profile family internally and externally gives a coherent result, and it is a common request in period properties.
