Fire rated glazing is not simply toughened glass. It is a tested system, and the rating applies to the whole assembly: glass, frame, seals, ironmongery and installation detail together. Swapping any component for something untested invalidates the certification, which is why fire glazing is specified and installed as a complete package rather than assembled from parts.
Ratings are expressed as a letter and a number. E covers integrity, meaning the assembly holds back flames and hot gases. EI adds insulation, meaning it also limits heat transfer to the unexposed side. EW limits radiated heat. The number is the tested duration in minutes, typically 30 or 60.
Which one you need is determined by the building, its use and the escape route strategy, not by preference. If you have a fire strategy report, a Building Control officer’s requirement or an architect’s specification, send it to us and we will quote against it.
What affects the price of fire rated glazing
Fire rated glazing is priced per project and against a specification:
- Rating required — EI30, EI60 or higher, and whether insulation is needed as well as integrity. EI costs considerably more than E alone.
- Size and configuration — a single glazed door leaf versus a full screen with doors within it.
- Frame system — the frame is part of the certified assembly and must be tested with the glass.
- Ironmongery — closers, hinges, locks and intumescent seals all form part of the tested system.
- Certification and documentation — you will normally need the test evidence and installation records for Building Control or your insurer.
We quote against a written specification. If you do not have one yet, speak to your Building Control officer or fire engineer first, because guessing at a rating is not something we will do on your behalf.

Common questions about fire rated glass
Is toughened glass fire rated?
No. Toughened glass is safety glass, which is a different thing entirely. It is designed to break safely, not to resist fire. Fire rated glazing uses specific tested products and must be installed as a complete certified system.
What rating do I need?
That is determined by the building, its use, and the escape route strategy. It comes from your Building Control officer, fire engineer or architect. We install to a specification rather than advising you what your rating should be, because getting that wrong has serious consequences.
What is the difference between E, EI and EW?
E is integrity only: it holds back flame and hot gases. EI adds insulation, limiting heat transfer to the safe side. EW limits radiated heat. EI is the most demanding and the most commonly specified where people pass close to the glazing.
Can I use fire rated glass in a normal door?
Only if the door, frame, seals and ironmongery are part of the same tested assembly. Fitting fire glass into an untested frame does not give you a fire rated door and will not satisfy Building Control.
Does it look different from normal glass?
Modern fire rated glass is clear and, in most domestic applications, visually very close to standard glazing. Some higher-rated insulating products have a slightly different appearance because of the interlayers.
Will I get certification paperwork?
Yes. You will receive the product test evidence and installation documentation, which you will need for Building Control sign-off and often for your insurer.
Do you do commercial as well as domestic?
Yes. Fire rated screens and doors are more common in commercial and multi-occupancy buildings, and we supply both.
